4 brave souls departed at 7am from Redmond to Mt Rainier NP. Today’s goal: hike up to Camp Muir and for those with AT skis, ski down again. The hike to Muir was in mostly sunny weather, almost too warm for hiking. Some strenuous 6 hours later, all four of us made it up to the 10061″ camp. Surprise: Eventually even quite light AT skis become heavy and a real drag.
Skiing down was on wonderful spring snow, grainy and maybe 2in deep on solid base and light ice crust on exposed areas. What a joy to ski this mountain’s slopes!
Our 2 hikers made it down in only ~45 min later than us skiiers. Other than Rennie’s short disagreement with his ice axe (thankfully only small rash bruise), we made it back to Paradise Inn in one piece, but really tired. What a blast! Thanks all for a great day at Mt Rainier.

Stats:

Distance: 9mi / 14.6km roundtrip
Elevation gain:  4681ft / 1404m
High point: 10061ft / 3018m
Hiking time: ~6hrs up; down: 1hr skiers, 1:45hr hikers
Weather: mostly clear, sunny, some clouds in the distance and at Camp Muir, ~55 at TH

oh my, this really looks far away…
Parking lot next to Paradise Inn, there is still a huge amount of snow up here

Gang of 4, right at the trailhead ans still looking rested

Shabnam and Rennie; our 2 brave hikers, booting it up to Camp Muir

David on skins – are we there yet?

Rennie – does he ever tire?

Shabnam, always smiling

Shabnam still climbing; David – is it time for lunch yet?

Gerhard, enjoying the view from Camp Muir

At Camp Muir, we made it!! Yes, it was rather cold at the camp, glad we brought fleeze and shells.

Initially we thought of Annette Lake, but the weather wasn’t very inviting plus we still had doubts about how much snow is left on the trails.
So we preferred to stay more local and do a quick hike on the western part of Rattlesnake Mountain. We did get a bit soaked on the way up but rain stoped at the Overlook. Time for cheese and wine to warm up.

Stats:

Distance: 4.8mi / 7.8km roudtrip
Elevation gain:  1200ft / 360m
High point: 2160ft / 648m
Hiking time: 0:50hr up, 0:30 down
Weather: rainy, ~50 at TH

Alright, I went skiing again today, so call me obsessive…
Today, I got to Alpental before they opened, made it on the second chair. Early in the morning, conditions were even better than yesterday, with a fine grainy coat on top of a firm but not icey snow pack. Even in steep terrain, good to carve and turn. Did several runs down Shot Six, but today I traversed further west along the rock face for a less travelled run facing the valley: a most wonderful, evenly steep slope with more of that spring grainy snow, made for a dance on skis.
One advantage of spring skiing: Get home, drop the ski gear and change into shorts, grab a glass of Pernod and enjoy the warm sun in my back yard. Now that’s my kind of Apres-Ski 🙂
Stats:
got there at ~8:30 and stayed till 1:00
snow starts to open up fissures off the runs, snow cover is getting heavier
main runs are still completely blanketed with snow, but snow is very heavy & slushy at base, especially around noon
Moguls get now even more pronounced, good thighs and back muscle exercise
Did about 4 runs on Shot Six and 5 down International

Snow boarders near top of Edelweiss, above Schlucht.

Looking back and up Shot Six: a narrow (8ft) & steep (maybe 40 deg incline) alley, squeezed between cliff and dense trees. This is the entry to some nice slopes.

Don’t know this guy, but he was following me all day, couldn’t shake him off… here at the bottom of Shot Six, before traversing beneath the rock face.

Bottom of Shot Six, traversing beneath the rock face.

Snoqualmie Falls: Hot weather in the mountains means lots of melting. Along I-90, water is gushing over all rock faces, this all leads into Snoqualmie River which has to jump off the cliff here at Snoqualmie Falls.

But not this season: This must have been my latest skiing (except for summer skiing on glaciers). We’re less than 2 weeks away from June and I’m skiing…
Alpental still has 8+ ft and they re-opened for this weekend. Snow galore!! Base part is a bit sticky, but Edelweiss chair wasn’t too crowded (~5min waiting time max): International or Shot Six runs have still plenty and good snow, all grain but wonderful glide and still turns nicely
I’m likely going again tomorrow Sunday morning

Stats:
got there at ~9:30 and stayed till 1:30
base has >>8ft snow, summit >130in, no brown spots yet
International has great and well turning snow, base part gets a bit sticky towards noon

Wonderful hiking weather, with clear and blue sky. Very warm and humid at the bottom, nice, sunny and comfy on the summit. Last 1/4 (final mile) of trail is still under 1-2ft of packed snow and a bit icy. Glad we brought trekking poles.
Most wonderful view of Mt. Rainier!! And yes, the view is even more enjoyable with good food and a glass of red wine 🙂

Descent was tedious, took us a full hour to get over the first snow-covered mile. But only another hour for the remaining 3 miles to the parking lot.

Stats:

Distance: 8mi / 13km roundtrip
Elevation gain:  3400ft / 1020m
High point: 3980ft / 1194m
Hiking time: 2:15 up, 2hrs down
Weather: sunny, 75 at TH
